“Pirate Radio”(2009)

Hey FilmFans-  Having explored Zora, and cleaned up @ the Preserve-  It is time to relax w/ friends.

On Tuesday, January 24th the lights will dim @ 8:00pm for:

“Pirate Radio” (2009)

Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy

Richard Curtis- director

Back to the 60′s when we were all much younger, some of us wearing much shorter skirts.

The British Music Invasion had arrived in the US.  But wait- the same music was banned in Great Britain.

Listening to broadcasts from ships floating in International Waters off the English coast, millions of daily fans eventually changed the course of British radio format, but not without a fight.

Loosely based on fact, this movie is FUN, and will make you remember that younger YOU, and the music you listened to.  Soundtrack includes music from: The Who, the Kinks, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones.

Feel free to bring your picture from 1966!!!   Hope to see you Tuesday night, Corbe and the MovieCrew

“Cabin In The Sky”(1943)

Hey FilmFans-  Things are buzzing @ AFKnotts where we begin our week-long “Exploring Zora- the life and times of Zora Neale Hurston”.

MovieNight kicks it off @ 8:00 on Tuesday, January 10th w/ a showing of:
“Cabin in the Sky” (1943, B&W, 98 min)
Ethel Waters, Lena Horne, Eddie Anderson, Louis Armstrong
1st film directed by Vincentte Minnell

Originally a Broadway musical(1940) also directed by Minnelli, “Cabin in the Sky” is considered a “Race Movie”. The black film industry was alive and strong in the early 40′s.
Films were often written, directed, and acted by blacks who presented their stories in the way that their audiences wanted to see their lives portrayed.  If their was no black theater in town, the audiences might not have a showing until late at night-  after the whites went home.  But they waited, and saw their stars.

That said, there are scenes which are hard for our 21st Century Sensibilities,  but this is an exploration of history, and “Cabin in the Sky” did break some ground. It also received an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” for “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe”
sung by Ethel Waters.
